Timo wrote me today and said that the store that was the main place to buy beans was burnt down, and beans are being transported other places from Kitale, so they are getting scarce there. Wycliffe wants to stock up for a few months, and have some on hand for distribution to the widows. We need about $1500, and will be sending out an emergency letter, I think. If you remember Eva’s story of baby Esther, that was a classic and very familiar case of children eating ugali (corn flour cereal) all the time, getting their bellies full, but dying of protein deficiency. Even though the violence isn’t affecting Kitale directly, no one will go unaffected by this. |

Every Day...- 30,000 children die of hunger and preventable diseases.
- 6,000 people die of AIDS. 17 million have already died. 12 million African children have lost one or both parents. About one half of all people in the world infected with HIV or AIDS are in Africa.
- 41% of the world's children cannot attend school.
 - 6,000 children in developing countries die because of lack of clean water and sanitation. In homeswith [these services] children are 60% less likely to die.
- 2% of the world's grain harvest would be enough, if shared, to erase the problem of hunger and malnutrition around the world!
- Poverty means illiteracy, inadequate medical care, disease and brain damage.
Poverty is an emergency. |
